XSML BOOSTS HEALTHCARE IN CONGO
Kinshasa, DRC, January 12, 2012
XSML today announced its first investment in Congo, DRC through the Central Africa SME Fund. This investment in Médecins de Nuit (MDN), a private healthcare clinic in Congo, will increase the range and availability of premier healthcare services provided by MDN in Kinshasa.
Congo continues to suffer from a grossly underdeveloped healthcare system. Public investment in the healthcare sector remains amongst the lowest in the world at only US$7 per capita. Meanwhile, Congo has one of the highest infant mortality rates. As such, private healthcare clinics fill the gap by providing for the unmet demand in Kinshasa and throughout DRC. MDN provides a critical medical emergency rescue service and operates one of the few working ambulances in Kinshasa, a city with an estimated population of 10 million inhabitants. The funding from the Central Africa SME Fund will be used for the construction of a new clinic containing two surgical theatres one of which is focused on maternity care, an X-ray machine, consultation rooms, a pharmacy and an emergency room (ER). The investment will enable MDN to offer their patients a broader set of services on an international healthcare quality level.
Jarl Heijstee, Managing Partner at XSML, said, "Our investment in a private healthcare clinic will send a clear signal to other investors that healthcare in Congo is a sustainable business that does not need to depend on donations but thrives on good healthcare management. MDN's focus on emergency rescue and maternity care has been an important factor in our decision to invest in a new clinic. Providing first class maternity services is an essential contribution to the improvement of the living standards and the lowering of infant mortality rates in Congo. We are proud to contribute to that goal."
MDN's home medical assistance and 24/7 ambulance service is new to Congo, where long waiting periods at a hospital for a consultation is the norm. Dr. Guy Bandu Ndungidi, Administrative Director of MDN, said, "When we first started our clinic in 2008, our goal was to provide international healthcare standards to the Congolese population as we are used to in Europe and the US. Today, our emergency relief and home consultations have brought a different approach to medical care in Kinshasa which could be consider as the first step to pre-hospital emergency in DR Congo. Also, this service has proven to be of critical help for the population and has been extremely appreciated by our patients. We are now ready to provide that same and even more comprehensive services to a larger part of the population. We are keen to partner with XSML as they understand the need to provide these services at an affordable, high quality level."
